Bhubaneswar: Celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin, typically falling in October, roughly five days after Dussehra, Kumar Purnima is one of Odisha’s most vibrant and cherished traditional festivals.

It marks a joyful celebration of youth, autumn moonlight, and divine blessings, while also heralding the birth of Goddess Laxmi, the deity of wealth.

At its heart, Kumar Purnima is a festival dedicated to unmarried girls. The term Kumar refers to a young unmarried person and is an epithet for Lord Kartikeya, the son of Shiva and Parvati. Renowned as the most handsome and eligible bachelor among the gods, Kartikeya inspires maidens to observe sacred vows in hopes of finding a husband as virtuous and handsome.

Dawn Worship: Maidens awaken long before dawn, bathe, and dress in brand-new traditional clothes. They pay homage to the rising Sun God by offering Anjuli—palmful of khae (puffed rice) mixed with janhi (striped gourd), cucumber, banana, coconut, and betel nuts (gua)— laid out on a kula (winnowing fan), while lighting diyas and offering prayers.

Dusk Worship (Chanda Chakata & Moon Anjuli): In the evening, attention shifts to the newly risen moon (Udila Janha). Girls gather to offer Chanda chakata, a traditional delicacy made of puffed rice, jaggery, banana, coconut, cucumber, milk, honey, ghee, and sugarcane in the shape of a half-moon. According to age-old folklore, catching a quick glimpse of the fresh moon as it crests the horizon ensures a young and attractive groom, whereas delays bode a less youthful destiny!

Grand Sacred Traditions at Puri Srimandir

Kumar Purnima holds deep religious significance at the 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri:

The Sacred Dice Game (Kauri Khela): A unique ritual takes place on the Ratna Simhasana (gem-studded throne), where temple servitors play a ritualistic dice game using conch shells (kauri) on behalf of Lord Jagannath and Goddess Mahalaxmi.

Divine Consequence: Legend and tradition hold that Lord Jagannath concedes defeat to Devi Mahalaxmi in this final game. As a result, his representative deity (Neela Madhav) is playfully “imprisoned” and escorted to the Mahalaxmi Temple for a week.

Prosperity Traditions: Inspired by this divine ritual, local residents and devotees engage in traditional overnight games of chance, believing it invites wealth and prosperity into their households.

Ushering in the Holy Month of Kartika

Kumar Purnima marks the official eve of the sacred month of Kartika, prompting thousands of devotees (Habisialis) to flock to Puri. Throughout Kartika, devotees observe strict spiritual discipline (Kartika Brata) and consume Habisa Dalma—a wholesome dish made of moong dal, colocasia, raw banana, elephant apple (oou), and ghee, cooked entirely without turmeric—eaten once a day before sunset.
