Bhubaneswar: Condolences poured in as India woke up to disheartening news of having lost the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who succumbed while undergoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Sunday. Here are some unknown facts about the legends with pictures picked from Twitter, mourning her death. With 30,000 songs in 14 Indian languages, she is the most recorded voice in history. Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore She was born in 1929 as Hema to a Marathi musician and theatre actor Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. Her name was later changed to Lata, inspired by a character named Latika from her father's play. Lata began her career at the age of 13 with Marathi movie 'Kiti Hasaal' (1942). She moved to Mumbai in 1945. She also acted in plays for her father when she was 5 years old. Lata Mangeshkar first tasted success with her song "Aayega Aanewaala" in Mahal (1949). Her first National Award came for the songs in the movie- 'Parichay'. O.P. Nayyar found Lata's voice too thin, too shrill, which did not suit his compositions. Sashadhar Mukherjee who was making a film- 'Shaheed' (1948) - has also dismissed her voice because it was “too thin”. Lata Mangeshkar's song “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon” moved Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru so much that he cried with tears at New Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on January 27, 1963. Lata Mangeshkar composed music for Mohityanchi Manjula (1963), Maratha Tituka Melvava (1964), Sadhi Manase (1965) and Tambadi Mati (1969). A perfume named 'Lata Eau de Parfum' was launched after the legendary singer in 1999. At that time because of her popularity, she was also nominated as a Member of Parliament. She was once given a slow poison by an unidentified person for which she was bed-ridden for almost 3 months. Lata Mangeshkar was the recipient of the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna and was also conferred with Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Legion of Honour among more. The legend breathed her last on February 6, 2022. “I won’t ever stop singing. When I die, my music will go with me”. The Nightingale of India Lata Mangeshkar left for her heavenly abode, but her enchanting voice will forever remain with us and generations to come.
