Berhampur: In a testament to the spirit of deep compassion and fellow feeling, a noble soul from Odisha’s Gajapati district emerged as a guiding light for generations to come even in death.
In an act of unparalleled altruism, 63-year-old Ramesh Ranasing, a resident of Jalibadi village under Mohana police limits, had his wish of organ donation fulfilled at the hospital where he breathed his last while undergoing treatment following a road accident.
Ramesh and his relative Debraj Paik were travelling on a motorbike towards Khasada village on the morning of March 31 when tragedy struck.
A collision with another bike at Badasindhaba left both of them grievously injured. They were rushed to Chandragiri Hospital, and then referred to Berhampur for advanced treatment. As their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh.
Despite the best efforts of doctors, Ramesh succumbed to his injuries at around 5 pm on April 1.
Yet, even in death, he emerged as a beacon of life. His heart and kidneys were donated at the hospital, offering a second chance to those in desperate need of these important organs.
As Ramesh’s mortal remains were brought to his native village, the community was engulfed in profound grief. The loss caused by his sudden death was deeply felt, yet his family and fellow villagers felt immense pride for his generous, life-saving deed.
Quite aptly, he was given a royal farewell as Mohana Police accorded a guard of honour to the departed soul, acknowledging his noble contribution to humanity.
Ramesh leaves behind a big family — seven daughters and a son, who serves as a constable in Odisha Police.
