Odisha’s Premier Cancer Hospital Renamed

Cuttack: Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC) here has been renamed as Acharya Harihar Postgraduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC).

“The Government of Odisha have been pleased to rename Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Center (AHRCC) as Acharya Harihar Postgraduate Institute of Cancer(AHPGIC) for all purposes with effect from the date of issue of this notification,” a notification released by Health and Family Welfare Department said on Monday.

The decision to rename the government-run premier cancer hospital was taken during the governing body meeting of AHRCC held in January 2019.

On January 28, Health and Family Welfare Minister Naba Kishore Das had also announced a second campus of the cancer centre with 425 beds and a state-of-the-art ICU.

The Minister had also said that steps would be taken to fill up vacant posts of doctors.

One of the 25 recognised regional cancer centres in India, AHRCC was founded on February 2, 1981, as the Radiotherapy Department of SCB Medical College and Hospital. It was converted into an autonomous body on April 24, 1984. With the opening of postgraduate course in Surgical Oncology and Gynecologic Oncology in 2017, it had turned into a medical college.
