Kochi: The Ernakulam Central Police have registered a case against Malayalam actress Shwetha Menon, known for her work across Hindi and regional cinema, following a court directive.
She has been booked under Section 67A of the IT Act, 2000, which addresses publication or transmission of sexually explicit material in electronic form, for allegedly profiting from roles in films with vulgar and obscene content. Police have also included Sections 5 and 3 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act in the FIR.
Public activist Martin Menachery had moved the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court, alleging that the actor acted in films and advertisements, which featured nudity, which were then shared via social media and adult websites for commercial gain. He mentioned Menon’s roles in films such as Rathinirvedam, Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha and Kalimannu, along with her appearance in a condom advertisement, as examples of allegedly obscene content, Mathrubhumi reported.
Interestingly, the FIR has come at a time when she is contesting for the post of president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) in the elections to its governing body scheduled to be held on August 15.
Menon has also acted in Hindi movies Bandhan starring Salman Khan and Asoka with Shah Rukh Khan. While she was last seen in Malayalam thriller drama Jankar, which released in July, her next movie Karam, an action thriller, will hit the theatres in September.
