Mumbai: Bollywood actress Nargis Fakhri’s sister Aliya Fakhri has been detained by the New York police on charges of killing her former boyfriend last month.

According to a press release by District Attorney Melinda Katz, 43-year-old Aliya Fakhri had set a detached garage of the house on fire, which led to the death of 35-year-old Edward Jacobs (her ex-boyfriend) and 33-year-old Anastasia Ettienne, who were sleeping upstairs.

“You’re all going to die today,” yelled Aliya after arriving at the garage early morning on November 2. Both, Jacobs and Anastasia died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, said the District Attorney’s office.

The prosecutor stated that Aliya took this drastic step after her ex-boyfriend Jacobs failed to reconcile with her.

Meanwhile, a source close to Nargis told India Today that the actress had not been in touch with her sister for over 20 years and had nothing to say about the incident. The source also said Nargis learnt about her sister’s arrest through news reports.

However, defending her daughter, Aliya’s mother said, “I don’t think she would be killing someone. She is a person who cares for everybody. She tries to help everybody.”

She further revealed that Aliya’s opioid addiction following a dental mishap, might be the reason behind her erratic behaviour.

Aliya has been detained at Rikers Island, New York City. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Aliya is scheduled to appear in the court on December 9.

Aliya Fakhri is the younger sister of actress Nargis Fakhri. Aliya and Nargis were born to Pakistani father Mohammad Fakhri and Czech mother Marie Fakhri.
