Puri: The Puri beach is among eight others in India to have been recommended to the International Jury of Denmark for the global eco-label ‘Blue Flag’ certification to the shorelines under the Beach Environment & Aesthetic Management System (BEAMS) programme.
The Chandrabhaga beach in Puri district was the first in Asia to have got the tag in 2019.
Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar for the recommendation for Puri beach.

The tag is given to environment-friendly and clean beaches which are equipped with amenities of international standards for tourists.
A beach needs to comply with at least 33 pre-requisites to achieve the Blue Flag certificate. These include quality of sea water, toilet, changing rooms, first aid centres, solar lighting and parking lots.
“Development of world-class facilities and compliance of Blue flag criteria at the Golden beach in Puri and other beaches in the country will further develop new tourism hotspots and will boost sustainable beach tourism in Odisha and other coastal states,” he further tweeted.
