After Students’ Uniform, School Buildings In Odisha May Get New Colour

Bhubaneswar: After school uniforms, will the state-run school buildings in Odisha get a fresh coat of new colour?

The Mohan Majhi government recently changed the colour and design of uniforms for Class IX and X students of public and aided schools, replacing the green associated with the previous BJD regime with light brown and maroon.

Stating that education and educational institutions should be free from politics, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond said that the government may also change the colour of school buildings and the matter is currently being discussed. “The choice of colour was questionable because it was the party’s colour. We (BJP) feel there should be no politicisation of education in any manner. Which is why we have decided to change the school uniform colour,” he told a national daily.

The Naveen Patnaik-led BJD government, which ruled Odisha for over 24 years, not only introduced white and hunter green uniforms for Class IX and X students but also painted schools green akin to the colour of the party flag last year as part of its transformation programme.

The ‘green Odisha’ drive also saw Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation logo to public buses, walls, footpaths and some government buildings also being painted over.

Gond added that the colour of all such public facilities, including hospitals, will be changed in a phased manner if necessary.

Naveen, however, has criticised the BJP government for such cosmetic changes. “Beyond changing names of the previous government’s schemes and colours what has the new govt achieved in the last 100 days?” he asked.
