Ramgarh: An Agniveer jawan of the Indian Army died during physical training at the Punjab Regimental Centre in Ramgarh Cantonment in Jharkhand on Tuesday.

In a statement issued by the Army on Wednesday, it was mentioned that the young recruit complained of breathlessness when he was undergoing his routine physical training at the Punjab Regimental Centre.

Jashanpreet Singh (21), from the Lohgargh village in Punjab’s Firozpur district, was administered first-aid and then moved to hospital, but he could not be revived.

“On Tuesday, the 21-year-old recruit complained of breathlessness and was immediately administered first aid before being evacuated to Military Hospital Ramgarh. Unfortunately, he lost consciousness en route,” the Army said.

“Despite the administration of intravenous adrenaline, intubation, intravenous fluids, and other supportive measures, the medical team was unable to revive Agniveer Jashanpreet. The Indian Army stands firmly with the bereaved family in this hour of grief. All necessary support and assistance are being extended to the family,” the Army said.

“The Indian Army salutes the courage and dedication of Agniveer Jashanpreet Singh and deeply mourns the loss of a brave soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” it was added in the statement.

In October 2024, two Agniveers were killed in an accident during a field firing exercise in Maharashtra. The army launched a court of inquiry to determine the cause of the accident.

Gunner Gohil Vishvarajsinh (20) and Gunner Saikat (21) from the Artillery Centre Hyderabad died during a field firing exercise at the Deolali Field Firing Ranges in the Nashik district, the Army had then confirmed.

A team of Agniveers was firing a field gun when one of the shells exploded, the official statement has said, adding the duo sustained injuries and were taken to the military hospital at Deolali, where they were pronounced dead.

A case of accidental death was registered at the Deolali Camp police station based on a complaint by Havildar Ajit Kumar.

All recruitments of personnel (below officer rank) in the Army, Navy and Air Force, are now conducted through the Agnipath scheme.

Of the Agniveers recruited, 25% are absorbed as regular soldiers after four years. The remaining leave with Rs 10 lakh (over and above what they have earned as salary) and then can seek recruitment with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) that have special schemes for them.

Others may use the money to start their own trades, based on the skills picked up over their four years in service.
