New Delhi: Amid ongoing disruptions caused by the Iran-related conflict in the Middle East, Air India has received temporary regulatory relief allowing longer pilot duty hours to help manage extended international flight routes.

India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), granted the airline a temporary relaxation of Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) according to various media reports. The measure came after airspace restrictions in parts of West Asia forced airlines to take longer alternative routes, increasing travel time on several long-haul flights.

The exemptions took effect on March 13 and are expected to remain in place until April 30, according to a NDTV report.

The Middle East conflict, involving Iran and its adversaries, has led to partial airspace closures and safety concerns, forcing airlines worldwide to adjust flight paths. These diversions have increased operational pressure on airlines, particularly on routes connecting India with Europe and North America.

To maintain schedules despite these longer routes, the DGCA allowed Air India to slightly increase pilot flying time limits while ensuring safety norms such as mandatory rest periods continue to be followed.

The aviation sector has been among the industries most affected by the geopolitical tensions. Flight rerouting has increased fuel consumption, crew requirements, and operating costs. Other Indian airlines have also faced similar challenges, including rising fuel prices and route disruptions due to the conflict.
