The annual mega sales of e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart have posted record numbers this year. Amazon on Monday said it has had its best opening ever in India.
The five-day sale, which began on September 29 has products with discounts across all segments. Amazon reportedly sold Rs 750 crore worth of premium smartphones in the first 36 hours, with OnePlus, Samsung and Apple leading the charts.
Walmart owned Flipkart reported a double digit sales growth compared to last year’s Big Billion Days sale.
Large appliances and TVs have seen a 10x growth compared to their average numbers. Fashion and apparel sales also increased by 4.6 times. Grocery is up by 3.5 times.
A major boost has come from smaller cities. Amazon said 91 per cent of its buyers came from tier II and tier III cities.
A leading traders body has, however, accused the eCommerce platforms of misusing FDI norms and charging GST on the discounted price.
