Berhampur: A pregnant woman from Odisha’s Ganjam district, who was travelling in a bus, reportedly gave birth to a baby girl safely inside the vehicle after a nurse from Andhra Pradesh stepped in to help her.
The incident took place near Palasa on Wednesday night when the woman was returning home with her husband after a pregnancy health check-up in Visakhapatnum and the contractions started, sources said.
As per reports, the woman, identified as P Yamuna Reddy, wife of Dilli Rao of Sural village under Chikiti block in Ganjam, was travelling in an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus when she got labour pain.
A nurse from Brahmantarala village, who was travelling in the same bus, came to her aid at the right time. She asked the driver to park the bus along the road. After requesting the rest of the passengers to get off the bus, the nurse managed to deliver the baby and call an ambulance to carry the lady to a hospital in Palasa for post-partum care.
The woman and her newborn daughter were later taken to a hospital at Palasa. The mother-daughter duo is now doing fine and got discharged on Thursday, sources said.
The Andhra Pradesh government has reportedly congratulated the nurse on her bravery and resourcefulness, they added.
