Another Coronavirus Strain Detected, This Time In Germany
Berlin: The UK coronavirus strain has spread to 60 countries, including India. Now, there’s news of a German variant of the deadly virus which has rocked the world for almost a year.
About 35 patients were detected with the new mutation at a hospital in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, southern Germany. Though doctors confirmed it’s different to the one found originally in the UK and even South Africa, they are yet to ascertain whether it is highly infectious.
“The mere fact that it’s a new variant doesn’t mean it’s more infectious,” said the managing director of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen clinic Frank Niederbühl.
“We have to wait for the complete sequencing. We cannot say at all at the moment whether this (mutation) has any clinical relevance,” deputy medical director Clemens Stockklausner said.
Samples have been sent to Berlin’s Charite Hospital for examination, DW reported.
