Anubhav Mohanty Raises Airline Restriction On Check-In Bag Numbers In RS
New Delhi: BJD MP Anubhav Mohanty has sought the intervention of the Centre to reverse the restrictions imposed by private airlines on the number of check-in bags for the economy class.
Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha during the Question Hour, Anubhav demanded that the airlines be directed to revert to the earlier system of restricting the check-in baggage to 15 kg, irrespective of the number of pieces.
“Except Jet Airways, no scheduled domestic airlines put restriction on the number of the check-in baggage,” clarified Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu.
Jet Airways has restricted the number of pieces of check-in baggage to one, weighing 15 kg or less, with effect from July 15, he said.
Prabhu further said airline services have been unbundled since 2016 and the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation has ‘limited powers’ over them.
“Limiting check-in baggage to 15 kg is understood. But why the number of bags. I will look into it,” he assured.
The BJD MP also sought employment of Odia air hostesses and flight stewards, besides announcements in Odia in the flights flying from Odisha.
