Bargrh: The artist selection process for the 78th Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav in Odisha’s Bargarh, considered the world’s largest open-air theatre festival, is set to begin this week.
The organising committee announced that the selection will be conducted for three days at the Town Hall in Bargarh from November 15 to 17.
On November 15, organisers will conduct auditions for roles including Devaki, Narada, Chanura, Mushtika, Sarthaki, Vasudeva, Akrura, and Ugrasena. On November 16, they will evaluate candidates for Mahamantri and Senapati. Finally, on November 17, they will hold interviews for the crucial role of King Kansa.
Applicants must arrive at the venue by 9:30 a.m. on their designated date. The committee will notify candidates by phone to ensure smooth coordination.
A total of 291 artists submitted applications for various roles. Specifically, 44 applied for King Kansa, 33 for Mahamantri, 74 for Senapati, 14 for Devaki, 20 for Narada, 17 for Chanura, 10 for Sarthaki, 18 for Mushtika, 30 for Vasudeva, 20 for Akrura, and 11 for Ugrasena.
Dhanu Yatra, celebrated annually in Bargarh, recreates episodes from Krishna Leela and attracts thousands of visitors. Moreover, the festival transforms the entire town into a stage, with residents and selected artists performing mythological characters. The artist selection process ensures authenticity and community participation, keeping the tradition alive.
The committee emphasised that the upcoming edition will maintain the grandeur and cultural significance of the festival. Consequently, with hundreds of applicants vying for key roles, the 78th Dhanu Yatra promises another spectacular celebration of Odisha’s heritage.
