Puri: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has decided to replace about 200 weak stones in the Baisi Pahacha, the flight of 22 steps leading to the Jagannath Temple here.
A four-member ASI team led by Superintending Engineer Arun Mallickexamined the stones during a visit to the temple on Wednesday.
Talking to the media later, Mallick said that about 10 stones in each pahacha (step) have been damaged due to excessive summer heat. Apart from this, gaps have developed between the stones in the entire flight of steps due to the seepage of water.
He said the ASI will conduct grouting and seal the joints with chemicals after replacing about 200 weak stones. To measure the strength, each stone will be hammer tested. “We have informed the temple administration about the number of Khondalite stones required for the purpose,” he added.
Mallick further informed steps have been taken to bring stones from the Khondalite mine in Tapang area of Khurda district, which is under the possession of the Jagannath Temple.
“Since the temple is closed for the devotees due to COVID-19 pandemic, we will try to replace these stones ahead of the schedule,” he pointed out.
