Bhubaneswar: Asma al-Assad, wife of ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, has reportedly filed for divorce and is eager to return to UK.
Reports indicated that she is unhappy with her life in Russia’s Moscow, where they are residing in exile. Her application, seeking divorce and special permission to leave Moscow, is currently being evaluated by Russian authorities, Jerusalem Post reported, quoting Turkish and Arab media.
Asma is a dual British-Syrian national born and raised in west London to Syrian parents. She is an investment banker who attended school and university in London. She moved to Syria 2000 at the age of 25 after marrying Assad, and they have three children.
The former Syrian first lady had two brushes with cancer. She was diagnosed with Leukemia in May this year after battling breast cancer in 2018.
The UK official, however, have declared her “no longer welcome” due to sanctions imposed since 2012 due to her ties to her husband’s regime.
Earlier in December, Assad was removed from power by rebel forces under Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leadership, bringing an end to over five decades rule of the dynasty in Syria.
