Kabul: At least 17 people were killed in Kabul after members of Taliban fired weapons into the air to celebrate their gains in Panjshir province, which is under the control of anti-Taliban fighters, Reuters reported quoting other agencies.
Taliban sources told Reuters on Saturday that its fighters had captured Panjshir Valley, their final destination.
“By the grace of Allah Almighty, we are in control of the entire Afghanistan. The troublemakers have been defeated and Panjshir is now under our command,” a Taliban commander claimed.
Even as heavy fighting continues in Panjshir, which has left hundreds dead, Taliban fighters broke into celebrations in the Afghan capital on Friday night by firing in air claiming ‘victory’. Unfortunately, suspected civilians were hit.
Resistance leaders, however, denied Taliban’s claim. “News of Panjshir conquest is circulating on Pakistani media. This is a lie,” said leader of the rebels Ahmad Massoud.
