Tehran/Tel Aviv/Istanbul: At least 18 people were killed, and 24 others injured in US-Israeli attacks targeting residential areas in northern Iran on Tuesday, Iranian media reported. There were two children among those killed, it was reported.
The strikes hit homes and shelters in the region in the morning, Fars News Agency reported, citing a deputy governor of Alborz province.
The official said 18 people were confirmed dead, including two children, and 24 others were injured and taken to medical centers for treatment.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned it would cut off oil and gas supplies to America and its allies for years if US president Donald Trump follows through on threats to attack infrastructure. This statement was carried by Iranian media. It also warned Gulf states and signalled reduced restraint in potential retaliation, according to the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, two attackers were killed in a gunbattle outside a building housing the Israeli consulate in Istanbul. A third one has been detained, Turkish media reported. A police officer was injured during the clash. The assailants, armed with long-barrelled weapons, prompted authorities to seal off the surrounding area.
A projectile hit a container ship in the Persian Gulf when it was in international waters. This happened near Iran’s Kish Island, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. No injuries or pollution occurred, the British military said. The incident adds to more than 20 vessels targeted in the region since the war began.
Meanwhile, a rocket attack in Nahariya, northern Israel, wounded a 20-year-old woman. She suffered minor shrapnel injuries, according to Magen David Adom. Several cars caught fire and buildings were damaged after a direct hit. Ongoing rocket and drone strikes by Hezbollah triggered sirens across border communities Tuesday, it was reported by AP.
In its continuing offensive against Hezbollah, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said it struck a key crossing south of the Litani River used by the militants to move operatives and weapons. According to the IDF, the route facilitated transfers of rockets and launchers intended to support attacks against Israeli troops in the area.
