Sydney: Ending a 10-year long wait for the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Australia managed to win the fifth Test at Sydney with six wickets remaining and the series by 3-1. This also means that for the first time, India has failed to reach the World Test Championship (WTC) final in the history of the competition. India had reached the finals in final in 2021 and 2023. But in June 2025, India will not be part of the final at Lord’s in England.

Australia will play a two-match Test series later this month. The result of that series will however not affect their chances of qualifying for the WTC. At the world championship, Australia will take on South Africa. Australia have made it to their second successive final in the WTC. South Africa will face it for the first time.

Here’s what at the 5th Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Indian captain Rohit Sharma had opted out of the series final. The Indian team managed to score 185 in the first innings. Later, they bowled Australia out for 181. In their second innings, Indian batting side was not able to deal with the excessive seam movement. India was bundled out for 157 in their second innings. Australia had to chase a meek target of 161.

Unfortunately, Jasprit Bumrah—the leader of India’s bowling attack with 32 wickets in the series—couldn’t play due to a back injury. India fought hard. It managed to pick up four wickets. But that’s not sufficient. Australia comfortably chased down 162 with six wickets to spare.
