Bhubaneswar: Many parts of Odisha are likely to be lashed by heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm activity over the next five days under the influence of back-to-back low-pressure areas in the region.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood persists over the same region on Saturday. It is likely to move west north-westwards across Jharkhand during next 24 hours and weaken gradually thereafter.
This apart, a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coasts around August 25.
Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to pound many areas of the state up to the morning of August 28. The weather agency has issued orange and yellow warnings for different areas during the period.
During the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, and Bargarh. Orange warning has been issued for these districts.
Similarly, yellow warning of heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was issued for the districts of Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, and Mayurbhanj.
Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
On August 24-25, yellow warning of heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was issued for the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda.
Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
On August 25-26, yellow warning of heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was issued for Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore.
Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at some places of Bhadrak, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati,Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
On August 26-27, yellow warning was issued for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh districts about heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind.
On August 27-29, yellow warning has been issued for the districts of Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Nayagarh, and Ganjam.
Squally weather with wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail over North Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha coasts during August 23 and 24. Sea condition is likely to be moderate to rough over North Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha coasts during the period.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coast and over North Bay of Bengal on August 23 and 24.
