New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to P Chidambaram in the INX Media corruption case.
A bench headed by Justice R. Banumathi directed the Congress leader to deposit a bail bond of Rs 2 lakh along with two sureties of the same amount. The top court observed that the bail order will not have any effect on action against other accused in the case.
Chidambaram has been asked not to make any public statements regarding the case and make no attempt to intimidate the witnesses in the case.
His passport will remain confiscated, and he will not be allowed to leave the country without court’s permission. Besides, he can give no interviews to the press, and has to make himself available for interrogation in the matter.
The former finance minister was first arrested by the CBI on August 21 in the INX Media corruption case and was granted bail by the top court on October 22. The ED had arrested him on October 16 in the money laundering case.
In the case registered by CBI on May 15, 2017, it was alleged that there were irregularities in FIPB clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007. It was during Chidambaram’s tenure as finance minister.
