After 14 year, Bajaj Auto on Wednesday unveiled a scooter. The brand ‘Chetak’ has been rechristened as an electric scooter. This is also the first electric two-wheeler from Bajaj.
The Bajaj Chetak electric will have a maximum range of 95 km. It will have a IP67-rated lithium battery that can be charged from standard 5-15 amp sockets. Bajaj will provide home charging stations at nominal costs as well. The new Chetak Electric will feature a horseshoe-shaped LED headlight with DRLs.
To keep up with the retro appeal, Bajaj has used metal body panels instead of fibre or plastic. There is also a glove box with a modern soft-close touch. It will come in six colours, including the classic ivory and gold.
The console will feature feather-touch activated electronic switches.
Like other EVs, it will also have regenerative braking, a system that recovers braking energy and recharges the battery. It will also have connected tech for security and other purposes, which can also be accessed via a mobile app.
Nitin Gadkari and Amitabh Kant flagged off a ‘Chetak Electric Yatra’ in New Delhi, where 20 riders travelled to Pune.
Prices have not been revealed but Bajaj says it will be “attractive”. The Bajaj Chetak electric will go on sale in January 2020 and will be first available in Pune, followed by Bengaluru.
