Beyond the call of duty, the Bargarh SP had helped two accident victims while the BDO shattered some societal stigma by carrying the body of an abandoned old man.
According to sources, two persons, identified as Ganesh Bhati and Hemant Bhue of Attabira, were injured after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Patharla in Bargarh district on Tuesday.
The locals could not arrange any conveyance immediately to shift the victims, who were bleeding profusely, to hospital.
The SP happened to pass by while returning from Ainlapali firing range to his office in a car. On seeing the injured, he got down and sent the duo to hospital in his car.
Later, he took lift from another vehicle to reach office.
Similarly, the BDO set an example by carrying the body of an old man on his shoulders for cremation after residents of Banjipali in Balangir district refused to conduct the last rites fearing social ostracism.
The old man, Nath Baba, belonged to the Banjara community in Maharashtra. He had come to the area along with his gypsy group two years ago but was left behind as he was too old to move. He earned a living by palm reading and begging and stayed at the passenger rest shed in the village.
He had been keeping unwell lately and was found dead on Tuesday morning. As he was an outsider, the body was left untouched.
