Bhubaneswar: The Twin City Commissionerate Police arrested a BBA graduate, who allegedly committed theft in several houses in Odisha’s capital to meet his wedding expenses.
The accused has been identified as Sanjay Nishank (33), a native of Saradhapur area of Atri in Khurda.
Gold (423 gram) and silver (606 gram) ornaments with an estimated value of Rs 22 lakh and several pieces of lingeries were among the stolen items recovered from the possession of the 33-year-old management graduate, who had been arrested once in 2018 on charges of robbery and was out on bail.
The accused was planning to sell these valuables to make money for his wedding in December this year, police said.
Besides two laptops and two mobile phones, 230 branded jeans and 25 pairs of shoes that were ordered online were also recovered from his rented accommodation in Soubhagya Nagar near Delta square.
Notably, he was arrested on Monday based on four to five complaints of burglary in parts of the city. “This pattern of stealing undergarments along with the use of bike and helmet of a particular colour for some of the burglaries helped us in tracking and apprehending him,” ACP Sanjeev Satpathy told the media.
Asked about the motive behind stealing women’s undergarments, the police said Nisanka would store them in his cupboard and take pleasure in watching them from time to time.
Notably, five major burglaries were reported under Nayapalli and Chandrasekharpur police limits in the last two to three months. SInce the accused had worked as a delivery agent for a food delivery company and was well aware of the city roads and houses which eventually helped him to target houses that remained locked during the day.
Nishank was also arrested earlier in connection with theft cases and police had seized some stolen items from the possession of his ex-girlfriend. But she was not arrested as she was not aware the items were stolen. He had then confessed that he was committing burglary to gift his girlfriend.
