Udaipur: A Pakistan link has emerged in the gruesome murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal here.
Investigators suspect that the two accused — Mohammad Riaz and Ghouse Mohammad – have links with Dawat-e-Islami, a religious movement based in Pakistan.
It has been found that Ghous had travelled to Pakistan recently.
The duo was arrested on Tuesday after posting videos online admitting to the crime and threatening Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
They were avenging an insult to Islam after the victim supported social media posts in favour of Nupur Sharma, the now-suspended BJP spokesperson who made objectionable remarks against Prophet Muhammad.
Dawat-e-Islami is a non-profit organization which propagates the message of Prophet Muhammad through online courses and its television channel.
Founded by Maulana Ilyas Attari in Karachi in 1981, Dawat-e-Islami has spread to 194 countries. Those associated with the organization add ‘Attari’ to their names.
Riaz, one of the accused in the Udaipur murder, also uses Attari in his name.
The Special Investigation Team of Rajasthan Police and National Investigation Agency are trying to establish if they were part of a network of extremists.
The BJP has slammed the Ashok Gehlot-headed Congress government of negligence.
“The incident was not a murder but a terrorist attack,” said BJP spokesperson Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.
The state government has said Kanhaiya’s murder will be investigated under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
To prevent communal tensions flaring up and ensure peace, the government has clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 for a month.
