The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Srikakulam-based company for collecting and processing electronic waste.
The city reportedly generates about 2,000 kg of e-waste every month. There is no organised e-waste management system currently.
As per the MoU signed on Tuesday, one or two women self-help groups (SHGs) will collect e-waste from households and offices in Berhampur. The SHGs will be paid Rs 10 per kg of e-waste. Once a sizeable quantity is accumulated, it will be transported to a processing unit in Andhra Pradesh.
E-waste such as electrical and electronic devices will be refurbished, reused, recycled or re-sold as per their condition. This process would help reduce environmental pollution.
