Betel Vines Demolition Drive For JSW Project Ends In Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur; Rs 19 Cr Compensation Paid

Paradip: Measurement and demolition work of betel vines for the proposed JSW project came to an end in Jagatsingpur district on Monday with the destruction of 822 betel vines.

The company paid 757 growers, who vines have been razed, a compensation of Rs 19 crore.

The highest betel vine demolition was in anti-JSW bastion of Dhinkia village where 272 betel vine growers had given their nod for sacrificing their crop. Of them, 261 vines have razed and necessary compensation awarded to the 218 betel farm losers.

The work, that began on December 22, last year culminated after phase-wise demolitions in different villages beginning with the betel vine of Ranjan Behera of Gobindpur village.

Gobindpur was followed by Patna, Mahal villages and Dhinkia village. In Dhinkia, the work continued for 20 days and 218 beneficiaries were compensated, stated a release.

Similarly, in Gobindpur village, 96 vines of 102 beneficiaries were destroyed and 92 persons were compensated. In Mahal revenue village, 251 betel vines of 261 beneficiaries were destroyed and 236 beneficiaries were provided with financial assistance.

In Patna village, 214 vines of 225 beneficiaries were demolished , while 190 have been provided with financial assistance.

However, in Dhinkia village in the panchayat, some betel vines have been left out due to controversy over measurement and necessary action shall be taken by the local administration, stated the release by JSW.

On the other hand, the process of identifying and counting of trees in the campus of local people in Gobindpur village is in progress along with the construction of boundary wall by IDCO.
