Bhubaneswar: Call centres across the state have been put under surveillance by the Special Task Force of the Odisha Crime Branch for alleged illegal use of SIM boxes.
Acting on a tip-off from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), two call centres, in Chandrasekharpur and Laxmisagar area, were raided on Sunday and SIM boxes used to route international calls locally seized.
Bharat Matrimony has been sent a notice, asking to explain the use of the boxes at its Cuttack Road branch.
SIM boxes are devices to hold multiple fake SIM cards and are used to route calls. Apart from escaping international tariffs, these calls are difficult to trace and are hence reportedly used for other illegal activities. In July 2017, the police had cracked an extortion racket being run from Berhampur at the behest of underworld don Chhota Rajan.
