Kendrapada: The Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapada district was thrown open for tourists on Saturday after a three-month-long break.
The national park was closed for visitors from May 1 to July 31 in view of the mating and nesting seasons of the saltwater crocodiles,
During this restricted period, entry of tourists was strictly prohibited to ensure undisturbed nesting and breeding of saltwater crocodiles.
During these months, female saltwater crocodiles turn aggressive while guarding their nests along the creeks and riverbanks. To avoid any untoward incidents and to protect both wildlife and visitors, the forest department restricts entry into the park during this period.
With the breeding season coming to an end today, all tourist facilities including boat services, watch towers and entry gates will resume normal operations.
Tourists wishing to enter the park are required to carry valid identity proof, which has been made mandatory for entry.
Bhitarkanika National Park with its beautiful assemblages of mangroves is acclaimed as the mini Amazon.
Attracting tourists from across India and abroad, the forest department has forest rest house facilities in Dangamala, Habalikothi and Gupti, said a forest officer.
