Bhubaneswar: The Odisha capital is set to celebrate Christmas and New Year under heightened security with Commissionerate Police rolling out comprehensive measures to ensure peaceful festivities, including the popular ‘Zero Night’ events on New Year’s Eve.
Addressing a presser, Twin City Commissioner of Police Suresh Dev Datta Singh on Tuesday announced that an additional 15 platoons of police personnel will be deployed across the city for crowd management, traffic regulation, and prevent any disruptions. Police station in-charges have been directed to keep a strict in their respective areas, aligning with broader efforts to maintain law and order during the holiday season.
Police have Also issued a strong advisory against drunk driving, with intensive checkpoints planned throughout Bhubaneswar. “Strict action will be taken against those driving under the influence,” the CP emphasised.
To enhance women’s safety, plainclothes High Efficiency Response (HER) teams will patrol crowded and vulnerable spots. The city will remain under extensive CCTV monitoring for real-time oversight of public activities, he said.
The CP further stated that approval has been given for ‘Zero Night’ parties at select hotels and limited open venues, but only with mandatory fire safety clearances and adherence to norms. “Police will man entry and exit points at bars and pubs to avoid overcrowding,” he said.
Singh said that talks are underway with the Excise Department aim to finalise bar operating hours, with guidelines expected shortly.
