Bhubaneswar Records Season’s Highest Temperature At 43.8°C By 2.30PM

Bhubaneswar: Amid the prevailing heatwave & hot and humid conditions, Bhubaneswar recorded the season’s highest temperature at 43.8°C by 2.30 pm on Monday.

Balasore and Chandbali also saw the mercury soar to 40.7°C and 40.4°C respectively, while there was a fall in the day temperature at several other places due to thunderstorm and rain activity. Kenojhar recorded 38°C, followed by Sambalpur (36.6°C), Jharsugada (36.2°C), Paradip (35.4°C), Hirakud (34.8°C), and Rourkela (34.4°C).

On April 19, the state capital had recorded 43.6°C. While Bhubaneswar had recorded 41.6°C on Sunday (April 21), the mercury had touched 43.6°C in Keonjhar, 41.7°C in Sambalpur, 43.6°C in Jharsuguda, 41.9°C in Hirakud, and 42.1°C in Rourkela.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued heatwave warning for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Khurda, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balangir, Boudh, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, and Nuapada during the day. Hot and humid weather condition was likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

It had also predicted that the day temperature would remain 40°C or above at many places in interior Odisha and 3-5°C above normal in some districts of the state during the next 24 hours.

Additionally, yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 40- 50 kmph has been issued for one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

Hailstorm is also likely at one or two places in Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj till Tuesday morning.

While the thunderstorm activity may pull the mercury down by 2-3°C during the next 3 days, the day temperature is expected to gradually rise by 2-3°C during the subsequent 2 days at many places in the state, the MeT office said.
