Bhubaneswar Reports 550 COVID-19 Cases In A Week, ‘Super Spreader’ Infects 87 In Flour Mill

Bhubaneswar: After a record 124 new COVID-19 cases on July 17, Bhubaneswar saw the highest single-day spike of 126 on July 23, which pushed the affected tally to 1469.

Of these, 550 cases have been detected in the last seven days and 87 among them are employees of a flour mill at Mancheswar in the city infected by a previous patient.

While 362 of the 550 cases have been detected among those in quarantine, 188 are local contact cases, according to Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation tweets. Maximum of these cases are linked with previous patients.

While nine employees of a construction firm were also found infected on July 22, as many patients were identified from one location near Unit 2, MG Road, 7th Battalion, Chandrasekharpur, on July 23. Positive cases are also pouring in from different slums of the city with over 40 being reported on July 17, which also saw seven from media houses being infected.

The rise in group infections has become a cause of concern for the administration, which is trying to identify and isolate cases through door-to-door surveys to contain the spread of the virus.

The virus has so far claimed 11 lives in the city. With 805 recoveries, Bhubaneswar now has 651 active cases.
