Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is planning to construct an elevated corridor based on Nagpur model on Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan Road of Bhubaneswar.
The proposed elevated corridor is aimed at easing traffic congestion on the busy route in the capital city, Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan said on Friday.
The elevated road between Jayadev Vihar Square and Nandankanan will be integrated with the existing Jayadev Vihar flyover.
Stating that a double-decker design has been planned, the Minister said the corridor would feature a four-lane road for vehicular movement on the first level, while the second level would be dedicated to the upcoming metro rail project.
The project with an estimated cost of around Rs 2,700 crore will go a long way to improve connectivity within the city. The construction work is scheduled to begin by the end of April and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared. The design and execution strategy would be finalised soon
As per the initial plan, the elevated corridor will be built at a height of around 8 meters (26.24 feet) from the road, while the metro track will be positioned 14 meters (46 feet) above the ground.
Provisions would be made for escapeways at key junctions along the road, allowing vehicles to transition between the service road and the flyover without difficulty. The project is expected to be completed by 2027-28.
The elevated corridor is being planned as any further expansion of the existing Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan road at ground level would require relocating many residents and cutting down thousands of trees along the roadside. To avoid such disruptions, the elevated corridor has been planned as a sustainable alternative for easing traffic congestion.
