New Delhi: World Athletics has awarded India the hosting rights for the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships. And it’s Odisha capital Bhubaneswar which has been chosen as the proud host city.
The 22nd edition of the meet will be held at the Kalinga Stadium complex.
The Kalinga Stadium indoor complex will host the 1st National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026 on March 24 and 25.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) had revealed its bid for the World Indoor Championships earlier this year.
A two-member World Athletics team had visited the indoor facility at Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium in January.
On Thursday, the World Athletics Council approved India’s bid at its meeting in Poland’s Torun.
India will become the fourth Asian nation to host the World Indoor Athletics Championships, after Japan in 1999, Qatar in 2010 and China in 2025.
The 2026 World Indoor Athletics Championships will get underway on Friday.
However, there will be no Indian representation in the championships.
India have not yet won a medal at the World Indoor meet. All eyes will be on Bhubaneswar in two years’ time as the host country seeks to make its debut in the medals table.
