New Delhi: Air India will withdraw single-use plastics from its flights to Bhubaneswar and across its network from October 2. Food packets served to passengers will now come wrapped in paper products.
From Thursday onwards, 200 ml water bottle will be replaced with 1500 ml water bottle.
The withdrawal of plastic will be initiated in a phase-wise manner beginning with Air India Express and Alliance Airline flights, which include the service between Bhubaneswar and Jharsuguda. Single-use plastics will be phased out from Air India flights in the next phase, an Air India spokesperson said.
Here’s what the new onboard catering will look like:
1. Plastic tea cups will be replaced with sturdy paper cups.
2. Banana chips and sandwiches packed in plastic pouch which be made available in butter paper pouch.
3. Cake slices will be replaced with muffins to avoid the present plastic wrapping.
4. Special meals, which are ordered and paid for by passengers in advance, will be served in eco-friendly birch wood cutlery.
5. Crew meal cutlery will be replaced with lightweight steel cutlery.
6. Plastic tumblers will be replaced with paper tumblers.
Earlier, private carrier Vistara along with some other airlines had also announced a ban on single-use plastics on its flights.
