Bhubaneswar: Losing no time in its relief operations, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday, started distributing the Chief Minister’s Special Assistance to victims of the very severe cyclonic storm Fani, which hit the city with a wind speed of more than 200 km per hour on May 3.

In one of its biggest relief operations ever, the BMC has started distributing Rs 2,000 as distress assistance and Rs 500 for purchasing polythene sheets to each beneficiary in all 67 wards across the city.

The civic body started the pilot distribution of the relief in five wards of the city on Monday. The pilot wards were 15, 22, 23, 24 and 49. Today, a huge congregation of beneficiaries was seen in all the wards as they lined up to receive the compensation from the government.

Adequate police force has been deployed for the smooth running of the entire operation. While cops were deployed at each centre, a sector officer and a section each under each PS for the operation, six zonal ACPs are overseeing the work and one additional DCP has been deployed to monitor the process.

The assistance will be distributed to 1,02,296 beneficiaries coming under National Food Security Act (NFSA). An eligible beneficiary has to produce his ration card to avail the relief. The respective ward officials are monitoring the activity. The city as has been divided into 13 sectors for the purpose.

Sources said the civic body has geared up to execute the huge task as more than Rs 25.5 crore will be distributed through the city-wide process to help the needy in distress.

Multi-Agency Control Room

Meanwhile, the multi-agency control room registered more than 770 complaints till 5.45 pm today. The field operations were managed by 29 teams of the Works Department, 13 teams of NDRF, seven teams of Fire Service personnel, three teams of CESU in its three divisions to restore normalcy.

The Indian Navy today distributed 5,000 litres of bottled drinking water and 1,200 packets of biscuits in Rental Colony High School and Rental Colony Basti. Yesterday Captain Saroj Kumar Pradhan from INS Chilika visited the multi-agency control room in BMC and discussed the distribution plan of drinking water with officials.
