Buenos Aires: Carlos Bilardo, who coached the Diego Maradona-spearheaded Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup, has tested positive for novel coronavirus.
“They carried out a coronavirus test and it was positive, although he has not shown symptoms and he is okay,” Reuters quoted a family source as saying.
The 82-year-old former player and manager has been in a Buenos Aires nursing home for over a year.
Maradona was at his prime in back-to-back World Cups in 1986 and 1990, when Argentina made both finals under Bilardo’s guidance.
In 1986, Argentina pipped then West Germany 3-2 in the final in Mexico City, while four years later West Germany got their revenge edging out Maradona’s men 1-0 in the title clash through a late penalty.
Bilardo also won three Copa Libertadores titles as a player with Estudiantes between 1968 and 1970.
Argentina has reported 1,184 COVID-19 deaths so far.
