Bhubaneswar: The BJD has taken a strong exception to the statement of Odisha Assembly Speaker on behaviour of Opposition members inside the House.
Speaking at a presser in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, senior BJD leader and former Speaker Pramila Mallik said it was unbecoming of Assembly Speaker Surama Padhi to comment on any particular party. Earlier, Padhi had said disruptions or obstructions by the Opposition members would not be tolerated.
“The Speaker is supposed to play an impartial role. He/she should neither support nor criticise any particular party as per the country’s democratic traditions. But Padhi’s statement sounds like the voice of ruling BJP,” she said.
Mallik further said by stating that indiscipline by Opposition members would not be tolerated during the Budget session of the Assembly, the Speaker had belittled the dignity of the chair.
Claiming that Padhi had attended a party function, the BJD’s chief whip said the former should clarify whether she belonged to any party while holding the Speaker post.
Earlier, Padhi had said the opposition parties should play a constructive role and provide suggestions during the session. If they create ruckus or obstruction, it will not be tolerated in the Assembly during the upcoming session, she added.
