Bhubaneswar: Two persons, including a BJD youth leader, died while another was critically injured when the car in which they were travelling rear-ended a truck on National Highway 55 near Maratira village under Jarapada police limits in Odisha’s Angul district late Friday night.
The deceased have been identified as Amit Sahu, the district secretary of Chhatra Janata Dal, and his friend Bhishma Das. Both belonged to Talcher.
According to sources, the accident took place at around 2 am when they were heading back from a wedding feast, causing extensive damage to the car. They were rescued by locals and police soon reached the spot, following which they were rushed to district headquarters hospital in Angul. Amit Sahu and Bhishma were declared dead on arrival due to their severe injuries.
The third occupant was subsequently transferred to a specialised facility in Cuttack for advanced care.
Several BJD leaders, activists, and supporters assembled at the Angul hospital this morning to express condolences and support the affected families.
Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the incident, examining whether overspeeding or reduced visibility contributed to the late-night crash.
