The BJP may have won a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls, but the despicable acts of some of its lawmakers have done more harm than good to the party’s image. This may not bode well for the party in the long run.
Kuldeep Singh Sanger:
The latest incident, which showed the party in poor light was its silence on the Unnao rape accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar. Despite placing him under suspension last year, Sengar continued to assert influence to silence the victim’s family but the party chose to look the other way. It, however, was forced to act after the highway accident in Rae Bareli last Sunday left the rape victim critically injured. Sengar has been expelled from the party. The girl’s uncle has blamed Sengar for the accident.
Akash Vijayvargiya:
Sengar was not the only leader who brought shame to BJP, which won the people’s mandate for the second time in a row as it romped home to power. In June, party general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya’s son Akash, the Indore MLA, committed an act that left a big scar on the party’s image. On June 25, Akash was seen beating an official of the Indore Municipal Corporation with his bat for attempting to demolish a building.
Though Akash was issued a show cause notice, no follow up action was initiated against him. This despite the fact that the PM had rapped him over the incident, asserting that there was no place for such lawmakers in his party.
Kunwar Pranav Singh:
A month later, a video surfaced in Uttarakhand, showing BJP MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion dancing with guns to raunchy numbers. He was seen holding a gun in one hand and liquor in the other as he matched steps with Bollywood songs with his supporters. He has been expelled from the party for six years.
