BJP Leader Cancels Daughter’s Marriage To Muslim Man After Protests

Dehradun: A BJP leader from Uttarakhand has decided to cancel his daughter’s marriage to a Muslim man following pressure from Hindu outfits and fury expressed by netizens, reported PTI.

Yashpal Benam, municipal chairman of Pauri, had agreed to the inter-religion marriage keeping in mind his daughter’s happiness, despite knowing that there could be some backlash.

Accordingly, the wedding was fixed for May 28.

Little did he realise that it would trigger such criticism from the masses.

As the image of the wedding card went viral on social media, supporters and opponents of the BJP started flaying Yashpal.

There were protests by Hindutva outfits like VHP, Bhairav Sena, and Bajrang Dal at Jhanda Chawk in Pauri, where effigies of the BJP leader were burnt.

“We strongly oppose such a marriage,” district president Dipak Gaud said.

Yashpal told newspersons that he wanted his daughter to be happy with the love of his life, and so agreed to her marrying a Muslim youth.

“Now I have to listen to the voice of the public as well,” Yashpal said, adding that the wedding — in scheduled to be held in Pauri city next Sunday — had been cancelled.
