Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials carried out raids at fruit godowns and shops in different parts of Odisha capital on the eve of Sabitri Brata on Thursday.

The raids were carried out when the fruit traders were doing a roaring business for Sabirti Brata to be celebrated by married women tomorrow.

The Food Safety officers of the civic body inspected a number of fruit godowns at several places including Ashok Nagar and Bhddha Nagar to check the quality of stock, sources said.

Apart from godowns, several shops and vendors were also inspected by the Food Safety team of the civic body to ensure quality fruits are sold to the consumers.

During the inspection, over 50 kg of fruits with high amounts of carbide were detected and discarded, while notices were served to the traders.

It may be noted that Bhubaneswar market is flooded with large varieties of fruits including jack fruits, grapes, oranges, mangoes, litchhi, apples, bananas, watermelons, pineapples and date palms. Prices of fruits have also skyrocketed in view of tomorrow’s festival.
