New Delhi: The Yogi Adityanath-helmed Uttar Pradesh government continues to face the heat over last week’s killer stampede at Mahakumbh Mela which claimed at least 30 lives.
Now, actor-politician Jaya Bachchan has stirred a fresh controversy over the quality of water in Triveni sangam, claiming that the water in Kumbh is extremely contaminated right now.
“Where is the water most contaminated right now? It’s in Kumbh. Bodies (of those who died in the stampede) have been thrown in the river because of which the water has been contaminated,” Jaya told newspersons outside Parliament on Monday.
Accusing Yogi’s government of not making any special arrangements for the common people, Jaya complained, “The real issues are not being addressed. The common people visiting Kumbh are not receiving any special treatment and there is no arrangement for them.”
The Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP claimed postmortem of the bodies was not done and that there was a “complete eyewash” over the stampede.
“This same water is reaching the people there. They (BJP-led government) are not giving any explanation on this and a complete eyewash is being done,” she said.
“They are giving speeches on water and Jal Shakti. They are lying that crores of people have visited the place. How can such a large number of people gather in that place at any given point?” she questioned.

Samajwadi Party and other Opposition parties have accused the UP government of “hiding” the actual number of deaths in the Mahakumbh stampede and have demanded a discussion on the matter in Parliament.
