Angul: A 5-year-old girl, who had gone missing, was found dead in a pool of blood under a tree at a village in Odisha’s Angul district on Sunday, in a suspected rape and murder case.
The body of the girl, who went missing on Thursday, was lying in a pool of blood at Kankarei village under Industrial Police Station (Nisha) in the district.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the girl was sexually assaulted and killed. Police have detained a man in connection with the incident.
Sources said the girl had gone missing on Thursday afternoon and her family filed a police complaint on Friday. After the complaint was lodged, police initiated a probe. However, passersby spotted the girl’s dead body in a pool of blood on Sunday and informed the police.
On being informed, a police team visited the spot and initiated an investigation into the incident. The police have sent the girl’s body to Angul District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for medical examination.
A team of pediatricians from Cuttack will also be engaged to thoroughly investigate this sensitive incident, police said.
