London: In a groundbreaking achievement for Indian regional cinema, Manipuri-language film ‘Boong’ has been awarded the Best Children’s & Family Film at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), held at the Royal Festival Hall.
This marks the first time an Indian film has won an award in this category, spotlighting regional Indian storytelling firmly on the global stage.
Directed by debut filmmaker Lakshmipriya Devi, ‘Boong’ is a poignant coming-of-age drama that follows a young boy’s determined journey to reunite his family amid ethnic tensions and challenges along the India-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Khurkhul village and Moreh town. The film explores themes of resilience, hope, belonging, and familial love.
Produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s production house Excel Entertainment, the film stars Gugun Kipgen and Bala Hijam in pivotal roles. Its blend of humour, warmth, and cultural authenticity resonated with audiences worldwide, helping it triumph over heavyweight contenders like Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, Arco, and Zootropolis 2.
When ‘Boong’ was announced as the winner, Lakshmipriya Devi delivered an emotional acceptance speech, calling for peace and unity. “Thank you BAFTA for giving us not only an award but this stage to express our hope,” she said, dedicating the honour to Manipuri culture and the broader Indian film community.
The award ceremony, hosted by Alan Cumming at London’s Royal Festival Hall, celebrated cinematic excellence across genres.
Premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, ‘Boong’ had already garnered international acclaim before its BAFTA triumph.
