‘Break Monsoon’ Phase To Prevail In Odisha Till Next Week

Bhubaneswar: Even as Odisha has been witnessing a rise in day temperature and humidity during the peak monsoon season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the ‘break monsoon’ phase in the state will prevail till next week.

According to the IMD, ‘break monsoon’ phenomenon usually takes place in August when there is a break in the monsoon rain. During this period, the monsoon trough shifts closer to the foothills of the Himalayas resulting in a sharp decrease in rainfall over most parts of the country.

Due to the change in the weather condition, there will be a sharp rise in the day temperature in Odisha except the northern districts from August 8 to 12 while the temperature in the state capital will touch 34-35 degree Celsius from August 9 to 11.

Although there will be a fall in the day temperature by 1-2 degree on August 12 due to nor’wester rain, the average day temperature will be 33 degree Celsius, the IMD said.

Referring to the thundershower and moderate rainfall at some places in Odisha, the IMD said it is caused by the convectional rainfall. “As the energy of the sun heats up the surface of the earth, it leads to formation of water vapour. Besides, the hot air from the land expands and rise. When the hot air gets cooled and condensed in higher altitude, it leads to rainfall usually during the afternoon hours,” it pointed out.

The IMD further said the monsoon will be active in Odisha after August 15 with more rainfall as the monsoon trough will come closer to the state.
