Brown Sugar Racket In Odisha Jail: 7 More Nabbed After Police Seize 9 Mobile Phones From Inmates

Bhubaneswar: Seven more people have been arrested in connection with a brown sugar racket being run from a jail in Odisha’s Khurda district.

The fresh arrests were made nearly a month after the Khurda Model police busted the racket by arresting six people, including a woman, on February 20.

Sources said on Tuesday that the police nabbed the seven persons in a fresh action after obtaining information during interrogation of those arrested last month.

Nine mobile phones were also seized by the police during raids conducted at Khurda Sub Jail.

It may be noted here that around 260 grams of brown sugar had been seized by the police while conducting raid at a place near Gurujanga Mahotsav ground in Khurda on February 20.

The police had registered a case under the NDPS Act and arrested six persons  in connection with the illegal drugs trade.

During investigation, the police came to know that the brown sugar racket was being operated from Khurda Sub Jail. Some inmates of the jail were allegedly operating the racket by sending instructions to their associates through mobile phones, sources said.
