Bhubaneswar: A bus conductor was arrested by the police for allegedly strangling his wife in Old Town area of Bhubaneswarar over two years ago.
The accused, identified as Samarendra Biswal (53) of Sana Havelisahi village under Naikanidihi area of Bhadrak district, was apprehended near Balasore bus-stand by a police team from Bhubaneswar.
Samarendra, who was staying at Kunjapatna under Lingaraj police station area with his wife, had been absconding after committing the murder on December 9, 2021. He reportedly worked as a bus conductor in Kolkata after running away from Bhubaneswar and was nabbed during a visit to Balasore, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Girija Shankar Chakraborty told reporters.
Samarendra’s relationship with his wife Namita Sahu had soured and they frequently entered into fights. It was second marriage for both. While Samarendra’s first wife had passed away, Namita had separated from her first husband. The accused had even stopped supporting his family. The couple argued over some issue on the night of December 9, 2021. In a fit of rage, the accused sat on Namita and strangled her to death with a scarf.
Samarendra fled the scene soon after committing the crime and has been absconding since then.
The police subsequently sent Namita’s body for post-mortem and it was confirmed that it was a homicidal death. A case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman’s son.
The Lingaraj police had been on the lookout for Samarendra since December 2021 and on Saturday they received information that the accused was travelling by a private bus to Balasore. Accordingly, a team from Lingaraj police station waited for him at the Balasore bus stand and nabbed him when he reached there, police added.
