Bhubaneswar: Even as The Orissa High Court issued a notice to Odisha government over cancellation of students’ union election on Thursday, the students of the Utkal University in Bhubaneswar staged protest demanding the election.
Palpable tension prevailed in the university as students protested against the government’s decision on not allowing election in different universities and educational institutions in the state.
As per reports, a group of students went around the university campus raising slogans against the government decision. They also went to the students’ union room and damaged the furniture there.
On being informed, a team from Sahidnagar police station went to the university to take stock of the situation. However, nobody has been arrested in this connection.
It may be noted that this is for sixth consecutive year in 2023. The Akhil Bharatiya Bidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had filed a petition seeking the High Court’s intervention in allowing the students’ elections in univertsities and colleges.
The students of the university had staged a demonstration on the issues related to hostels on Monday. The students of first year and second year staged the demonstration in front of PG Council Office alleging delay in allotment of hostels to the newly admitted students.
